In 2017, the Chinese Consulate in Erbil reached out to Salahuddin University's language college to present the idea of establishing the Chinese language department.

Teaching Mandarin is a show of Chinese soft power to introduce the region to China, saying that "the population's attraction to Chinese goods has increased." Equally important, Chinese companies dominate Iraq’s main economic sector, and Beijing imports 40% of Iraq’s crude oil exports. Through a narrow focus on the hydrocarbon sector, Chinese investment has grown to include other industries, finance, transportation, construction, and telecommunications.

This initiative is part of Chinese president Xi Jinping’s announcement in 2013 of the ambitious Belt & Road Initiative (known as BRI). This initiative consists of a wide range of development & investment projects from East Asia across the Middle East to Europe.

One thing is sure: China is increasing its economic ventures in the Middle East, forging new economic partnerships, and expanding its global reach. Those dynamics give a strong signal that the US’ hegemonic days and years are numbered.

According to Reuter:
Trump said on Wednesday the 2027 U.S. military budget should be $1.5 trillion, significantly higher than the $901 billion approved by Congress for 2026. Any such increase in the military budget would require congressional authorization. The Committee for a Responsible Federal Budget, a nonpartisan think tank, estimated the proposal would cost $5 trillion through 2035, while adding $5.8 trillion to the U.S. debt with interest.

(Side note: China can never match US on defence spending, instead, it will try to reach $1.5 trillion on trade surplus by 2027, or by 2035 latest. AIMHO.)
