On September 5, the UN General Assembly voted on a resolution concerning cooperation between the United Nations and the Shanghai Cooperation Organization. A draft resolution that was supposed to be adopted by consensus had to go through a recorded vote because of the United States. In response to Washington’s attempt to undermine the resolution, Ambassador Geng Shuang, Chargé d’Affaires of China’s Permanent Mission to the UN, said the U.S. has repeatedly stood against the overwhelming majority of Member States, casting “no” votes on all seven General Assembly resolutions on UN cooperation with international organizations. By placing its own interests above the common interests of Member States and picking and choosing in UN affairs — embracing what suits it and discarding what does not — the U.S. has shown itself to be unwelcome.
