Chinese tourists make up a significant portion of foreign visitors to Japan. Between January and September of this year, around 31.65 million foreigners visited Japan, of whom roughly 7.49 million were from China, the most by country or region, according to government data.
Japan is making good money from Chinese tourists:
- The top tourist spenders by country are China, accounting for 21.3% of all spending (¥1.7 trillion or $11 billion), ahead of Taiwan with 13.4% (¥1.1 trillion) and South Korea with 11.8% (¥1.0 trillion).
- Chinese tourists spent an average of USD 1786 (approx. RMB 13,000), with notable spending on shopping, amounting to USD 765 (approx. RMB 5,600). Although Chinese tourists spent less on accommodation and entertainment services than their Western counterparts, their shopping expenditures stood out prominently.
- In 2024, international visitors spent a record ¥8.1 trillion, or about $56 billion.; about 20% spending were from Chinese tourists.
Now, the Chinese government urged its citizens to avoid visiting Japan as recent remarks by Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi on Japan's potential involvement in a Taiwan contingency grow into a wider diplomatic row.
