In the past, seismologists has estimated that there is a 70% chance of a magnitude 7 (M7) class earthquake hitting the southern Kanto region, which includes Tokyo, within the next 30 years.
Recently, Japanese Government panels have increased the 30-year probability estimates for megaquakes in areas like the Nankai Trough to 90% or higher.
The Kanto Region in Japan consists of seven prefectures: Tokyo (the capital), Kanagawa, Saitama, Chiba, Ibaraki, Tochigi, and Gunma, forming Japan's most populous and economically vital area, often called the "Greater Tokyo Area" when Yamanashi is included. Together, these prefectures form the political, econo omic, and cultural heart of Japan, often referred to as the Greater Tokyo Area.
A Magnitude 7 quake in the Kanto region would cause widespread severe damage, including building collapses, major fires (due to gas line ruptures/stoves), landslides, potential tsunamis (especially coastal areas), infrastructure failure (water, power), massive casualties (hundreds of thousands possible), and extreme economic loss, impacting millions across Tokyo and surrounding prefectures, similar to the devastating 1923 Great Kanto Earthquake, though modern building codes aim to mitigate the worst structural failures.
Any foreigner thinking of living, working, studying, visiting or setting up business in Japan should take the "earthquake risk " into their consideration.
