How strong is the US navy today?

Navy Survey Shows Continued Problems with Stress, Burnout Among Sailors: As of late February 2026, sailors aboard the USS Gerald R. Ford (CVN-78) are experiencing an heavily extended deployment, having been away from their home port in Norfolk, Viginia, for over eight months since departing on June 24.

US failing to recruit high quality navy crews: The U.S. Navy has lowered its test score standard for new recruits to the lowest level allowed by law, and it is now suspending its requirement for some form of secondary education. Recruits with no GED or high school diploma can now enter the service, so long as they can score above the 50th percentile on the Armed Services Qualification Test (ASQT).

An aging U.S. Navy fleet is facing a critical inflection point in 2026: the shrinking 290-ship fleet (on last count) is struggling to maintain operational demands amid slow, challenged shipbuilding rates. Rising maintenance costs, industrial shortfalls, and a shrinking work force size are complicating efforts to modernize, with over 35+ ships under construction facing delays as of late 2025.

The U.S. is facing significant strain on its ammunition stockpiles, particularly for artillery and precision-guided missiles, due to high-volume support for Ukraine, Israel, and potential conflict contingencies. While not completely out, key stockpiles are low enough to trigger intense efforts to rapidly increase production. It may take years to replenish certain supplies to pre-2022 levels. China's rare earth expoort control will slow or even halt some productions.

To what extend will fighting a war with Iran further damage the already weakening USA navy power?
